             Kharupetia is a small township in the Distdrict of Darrang in the state of Assam beside the N.H. 52 with a populations nearing 22,792 in 8 wards. The percentage decade growth for 1991-2001 was 31.62% on the basis of these figures, the population of Kharupetia Town may be projected at 30,000 persons in the Year - 2011. Most of the peoples are Bengali speaking. There are also Hindi, Assamese, Nepali speaking people.

Most of them of this town are businessmen. It is one the biggest market of vegetables & agricultural crops in Assam.. Vegetables are grown at Kharupetia and its surrounding areas which are supplied to various parts of N.E.States. Road communication of this town is very good and every 10 minutes there are public / govt. buses and other smaller vehicles like Winger, Sumo, Star Bus, Maruti Van, Maruti Car available on hire because all the buses from Arunachal Pradesh and Upper Assam on the north bank of river Brahmaputra have to run through this town to go to Guwahati, the capital town of Assam.

                 By road one can reach at Kharupetia from Guwahati as well as from Tezpur. Kharupetia, it is 84 kms from Guwahati via Baihata Chariali and 92 kms from Tezpur.

       The nearest airport is Guwahati Airport (Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Barjhar). The nearest railway station is Rawta Bagan but this will not be convenient for the people coming from outside of Assam. People can come to Kharupetia directly from Guwahati (Paltan Bazar Railway Station, Kamakhya Railway Station) or Rangia Railway Junction. For the tourists from outside Assam may have to come to Guwahati by train or plain and from Guwahati to Kharupetia by road. Buses will be available at I.S.B.T. (Inter State Bus Terminal) at Lokhra or Machkhowa Bus Station or Jhalukbari Chariali for coming Kharupetia. There are two lodges at this town to accommodate tourists.

NH-52, to Police Point, Kharupetia

             This town is one of the trade and commercial centre in the district as well as state. It is famous for the trade of agricultural crops and vegetable market. A large number of towns and places of Assam are supplied vegetables from its market.

              There are so many garages for the body construction and repairing of buses and trucks & a large number of people are engaged in this garages.

               There are a number of Mustard Oil & Rice mills here. Some Mudi mills are also set up. A jute-rope making mill has also been set up here. Raw-jute trade has being run from the british period by the traders.  RONGALI Brand Super fine Rice and Mustard Oil of Rongali Oil Mill and Rangali Agro-Tech Pvt. Ltd. have been received cordially by the customers of Assam. A large number of workers have got employment in this industry.

          There are also a number of steel fabrication industry and many youths are earning their livelihood from this profession.  There is also a Electric Transformer Repairing and Manufacturing industry in the name "DARRANG ENTERPRISE. There a large number of unemployed youths get their emplpoyment.

               

History of Kharupetia Town :

               Kharupetia Town developed its name from “KHARU”. During the pre-independent period, the river Brahmaputra was flowing by this place and a steamer-Ghat was established at this location. A large bangle said “KHARU” was dug out by some cultivators at the Steamer-Ghat presently known as “MELA-GHAT. Believed that this “KHARU” was left by some divine mother or Goddess and this place received its present name from this word “KHADRU”. This Steamer Ghat was gradually converted into present “KHARUPETIA” After establishment Town Committee under the Municipal Act, it has been known as “KHARUPETIA TOWN”.

Geographically Location :

              Kharupetia Town is located between 26^o32’32.08” North and 26^o 28’ 58.56” & 92^o 07’39.36” East and 92^o10’14.88” East longitude. The average altitude of the town is 64.00 m above mean sea level. Other essential geographical and climatic parameters of the town are as follows :

Temperature : 360C (Maximum), 140 C (Minimum)

Extreme Months : August (Hottest), December (Coldest)

Humidity :- 93% (Maximum) and 63% (Minimum)

Rainfall  : 1670 mm with 120 rainy days.

Monsoon Period : April to September.

Climate :  Moderate, hot and humid summer and cool and dry in winter.

              This town is at a distance of about 84 Kilometers from the city of Guwahati (Capital of Assam) , 92 Kilometers from Tezpur and 16 kilometers from the District Head Quarter Mangaldai. It is well connected by roads. The 52 No. National Highway passes through the heart of the town and has made it one of the largest commercial hub connecting the town with all the importand urban centres of the northern bank of Brahmaputra.

          A College in the name "KHARUPETIA COLLEGE" is located in the greater Kharupetia area for providing the higher education (Degree in both Arts & Commerce stream) to the students of this locality.

       Recently a private institution AJMAL COLLEGE of Arts & Science has been started and students provide Higher Secondary Education in Science and Arts in this college. Maryam Ajmal Women College is also established to provide education for the girls.

        There is one Higher Secondary School in this town named KHARUPETIA H.S. SCHOOL (Govt.) where students provide education from Class VI to XII (Science, Commerce & Arts) It stands at the heart of the town by NH-52.

           There are 4 High Schools. Among them Sailabala High School (Bengali Medium, Govt.), Kharupetia Town Girls H.E.School (Bengali Medium, Govt.), Kharupetia Adarsh Hindi Ucch Vidyalaya (Hindi Medium) and Kharupetia Balika H.E. School (Assamese medium), An M.E. School is also being running in the name "Tapoban M.E. School". There are 7 L.P. Schools.

             There are 5 English Medium Schools in the name Luit Valley High School, Morning Star English School, Sunflower English School & Sarada Devi Vidya Mandir and Abacus Academy.

              An educational institution in the name "NATIONATIONAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION" has been established to provide technical and academic education to the aged and non-school college going people. There is also a Jatiya VIdyalaya.

Kharupetia Town Field

       There is a large playground in the name KHARUPETIA TOWN FIELD where Tournament of various games and sports are held here. Meetings, Vijaya Dashami, theatre, Drama, functions, Mela are also held here.
        The field is specially famous for Bijaya Dashami where the idols of Devi Durga from Kharupetia and its adjacent places are brought to assembled them. People from various places of Darrang Districts come to visit and enjoy famous Bijoya Dashami at this field.

There is also another community hall at Gopinath Bardoloi Road at the premises of Kharupetia Mahila Samitee. There are Marriage Home (Bivaha Bhawan) too. One at the premises of TIGER CLUB and other is a private one in the name NANDI BIBHAH BHAWAN by NH-52.

        There  are a number of hotels and restaurants at this town where both veg and non-veg food is available with delicious sweets. There are lodges for lodging to avail the visitors and tourists. There is also two Dharmashala one is Marowari Dharmashala and the other is Trinath Ashram,

       Ambulences services are available at this town from Kharupetia PHC, 2 Nos. from Marowari Yuba Manch and one from Ramkrishna Sevashram. These services are  got  by the public for a very low contribution.

         There are 3 daily markets namely Kharupetia Daily Bazar, Old Market & Society Market. People purchase their daily necessary commodities such as vegetables, fish, meat, grocery item.

           There is a Cinema Hall named SHREE GANESH TALKIES at this town to provide the public entertainment. This cinema hall has digital projection facility with steriophonic sound.

There are a number of Drama, Jatra and Ameture Parties in this town.
